Get the instrument assignment before booking
Start with the teacher’s exact list. An instrument choice made for a general beginner may not match the part your child has been assigned. Confirm the instrument, any model requirements, and whether the school provides equipment for classroom use.
Kalman Music Lessons rents alto saxophones, flutes, Bb clarinets, and Bb trumpets, along with other instruments in the rental collection. We can help you interpret the requirements, but the teacher or program makes the decision about what is appropriate for that class. This service does not imply an affiliation with your school.
Send the teacher these questions
- Which instrument type and size should we rent?
- Are there required or excluded models, key systems, or features?
- What mouthpiece, reed, or other consumable supplies should we buy?
- Is the instrument used at school, at home, or carried between both?
- What date does it need to be ready, and is it needed during school breaks?
- Is there a music book, stand, or classroom supply list separate from the rental?
Save the answers and share them with the rental team. That is more useful than requesting “whatever most beginners use,” especially when there is a firm first-rehearsal deadline.
Match the instrument, case, and supplies
The instrument page describes the equipment supplied with the rental. Compare that list with the teacher’s requirements and ask about any gap before pickup. Consumables can depend on the player and program; do not choose a reed strength or mouthpiece solely from a generic checklist.
At the handover, check the instrument and case, and confirm how the accessories are stored. Make sure your child can manage the carrying arrangement if it will travel to school regularly. Keep a copy of the rental details with the parent or guardian coordinating the return.
Choose a term that fits the school schedule
Day and week bookings are available for the eligible band instruments, with a one-time short-term fee. For regular school practice, compare the monthly arrangement with the period you expect to need the instrument. Monthly rentals have a one-month minimum.
Ask what happens around holidays or a program change before making assumptions about a return. A rental does not automatically become a purchase, and a school year does not necessarily mean you should rent indefinitely. The student guide and rent-versus-buy guide can help with that longer decision.
Arrange pickup before the first rehearsal
Free pickup is available at Kalman Music Lessons’ East Village location by arrangement. Rental delivery is $25 anywhere in the five boroughs. Online delivery windows start the next day, while same-day pickup depends on an available slot and instrument.
Leave enough time before the first rehearsal to check the equipment and ask a question if something is unclear. A school deadline does not guarantee rental availability. Check the calendar for online bookings, or send the instrument requirements and date through an availability enquiry.

The instrument assignment, the date it is needed, your neighborhood, and the teacher’s model requirements are a useful starting point. You can submit the short form first and add the requirements as an optional message. We will confirm equipment and arrangements before the rental starts.
