- What is a Kalman Music Lessons membership?
- Kalman Music Lessons sells memberships as a monthly subscription to private music lessons at its nine studios in New York City. Instead of buying a package of lessons up front, you pay monthly or yearly and get a set number of private lessons each month, with the same teacher, at a standing time. There are three tiers: Hobby, Pro and Elite.
- How much does a membership cost?
- Hobby is $149 a month, or $99 a month if you pay for the year up front ($1,188 a year). Pro is $249 a month, or $199 a month billed annually ($2,388 a year). Elite is $299 a month, or $249 a month billed annually ($2,988 a year). Those are the full prices — there is nothing else to add.
- What is included at each tier?
- Hobby includes two 45-minute private studio lessons a month. It does not include weekly lessons, free group classes, an instrument rental or priority scheduling. Pro includes four 45-minute private studio lessons a month, free group classes and priority scheduling; it does not include an instrument rental. Elite includes four 60-minute private studio lessons a month, free group classes, priority scheduling and one complimentary instrument rental.
- Are memberships available for at-home or Westchester lessons?
- No. Memberships are for lessons at our New York City studios only. If you want a teacher to come to your home in NYC or Westchester, or you want to learn online, those are sold as single lessons and lesson packages on our pricing page instead.
- Can I buy a membership for someone else?
- Yes. Our gift checkout sells lesson vouchers — you pick a package, we email a voucher to your recipient on the date you choose, and they book from there. To set up a recurring membership in someone else's name rather than a voucher, call or text (917) 525-3374 and we will arrange it with you.
- Is a membership cheaper than a lesson package?
- Paid for the year, yes at every tier: $49.50 a lesson on Hobby, $49.75 on Pro and $62.25 on Elite, against $65 a lesson for a 45-minute 10-lesson studio package and $80 for a 60-minute one. Paid monthly, Pro and Elite are still below the package rate, but Hobby is not — at $74.50 a lesson it costs more per lesson than a package. Hobby billed monthly buys a smaller commitment, not a lower rate.
- Do unused lessons roll over to the next month?
- No. Membership lessons are an entitlement for the billing period and do not carry over — a lesson you do not use is forfeited. Weekly memberships allow one lesson per calendar week and bi-weekly memberships one lesson every other calendar week. If you want lessons that sit unused until you are ready, buy a package instead.
- Can I pause or cancel a membership?
- A membership is billed automatically until you cancel or pause it. You can pause at any time with at least seven days' notice, in writing — a text or an email is fine. Pausing does not restore lessons that were already forfeited. The full terms are on our lesson policy page.
- Which instruments can I learn on a membership?
- Any instrument we teach: piano, guitar, bass, drums, saxophone, clarinet, flute, trumpet, violin, cello, ukulele, voice and music theory. We teach children and adults, including complete beginners.
- Where are the studios?
- Kalman Music Lessons has nine studios across Manhattan and Brooklyn: Soho, Bed-Stuy, Bushwick, Crown Heights, Prospect Heights, Greenpoint, Upper East Side, Upper West Side and the Financial District. A membership can be used at any of them.
