Is music a form of meditation? It can be — but almost nobody listens that way. Music runs under our lives as wallpaper: commutes, workouts, inboxes. This class takes one hour a week and reverses that. You sit, the music plays, and listening becomes the whole activity instead of the background of another one.

What actually happens in the class

Guided deep-listening sessions built around a single piece of music at a time — sometimes recorded, sometimes played live in the room by the musicians who run it. Simple attention practices: following one instrument through a piece, noticing where a phrase breathes, hearing silence as part of the music rather than a gap in it. Some weeks include gentle sound-making — sustained tones, simple humming — but no session requires you to perform anything.

To be clear about what this is: a mindfulness practice that uses music, run by musicians. It is not music therapy, which is a clinical discipline, and we don’t claim its outcomes. What we do claim is more modest and real — an hour of structured, attentive listening is one of the most reliable ways to downshift a nervous system that’s been sprinting all week.

Who this is for

People whose meditation apps have gone unopened since March. Music lovers who want to go deeper than “I like this.” Anyone burnt out enough that sitting still with something beautiful sounds like medicine. No musical background needed, or even useful — beginners often listen with fewer filters.

FAQ

Do I have to sing or play anything? No. Some sessions offer simple sound-making; all of it is optional.

Is this meditation or a music class? Honestly, between the two — attention practice with music as the object. If you’ve never meditated, this is a very forgiving door in.

What music is used? Everything — jazz, classical, ambient, folk traditions. Part of the point is meeting music you’d never queue up yourself.

Prefer to make the music? Every instrument we teach starts at $15 for a first lesson.

★★★★★
Love Kalman music. I am learning guitar for the first time and Erika rocks and Tal was great at organizing. I've been picking it up quick. Not only are the instructors talented and great at teaching but they are also super flexible.

Alden is a wonderful teacher (sax for our elder and recorder for our younger). Highly recommend! And Tal runs a great ship. Really easy to deal with, price is right and incredible musicians.
