You don’t need to play a note to understand music — you need someone to point at what’s happening while it happens. Our music appreciation class for adults in NYC is exactly that: working musicians sitting with you inside the music you already love (and some you don’t yet), showing you what to listen for.
What actually happens in the class
Each session takes a piece, a style or a question and opens it up. What is jazz improvisation actually improvising? Why does a Beethoven movement feel like an argument being won? What makes a pop chorus hit — and why do producers all reach for the same four chords? We listen together, stop the track, point at the moment, play it again. When the teachers can demonstrate live, they do — hearing a walking bass line built in front of you beats any diagram of one.
No reading, no homework, no theory prerequisites. Terms get introduced only when they name something you’ve just heard.
Why bother learning to listen?
Because it compounds. Once you can hear a bass line, you hear it in everything, forever. People leave this class with their entire record collection upgraded — same albums, more in them. It’s also the best possible on-ramp if you suspect you’ll want to play someday: ears lead, hands follow.
Who this is for
Adults who love music and want more of it per minute. Concert-goers who nod along and privately wonder what they’re missing. Complete beginners — this class assumes nothing except curiosity.

FAQ
Is this a lecture course? More like a listening session with a guide. You’ll spend most of each class hearing music, not hearing about it.
What genres are covered? Jazz and classical anchor it, but the tools transfer — expect detours through soul, hip-hop, film scores and whatever the room asks for.
Will this help me start an instrument later? Enormously. Trained ears are half the instrument. When you’re ready, a first lesson is $15.
