Do you need rhythm to join a drum circle? No — you need hands. Rhythm is what the circle builds, not what it requires. Our NYC drum circle is facilitated by working drummers, drums are provided, and the whole thing is designed so a total beginner is inside the groove within the first ten minutes.
What actually happens in a drum circle
You sit in a circle with a hand drum — djembes, congas, frame drums, shakers for anyone who wants to start smaller. The facilitator sets a simple pulse everyone can hold, then layers parts on top through call-and-response: they play a phrase, you play it back. No counting, no notation, no wrong entrance that can’t be laughed off.
What emerges is bigger than the sum of anyone’s skill. A circle of beginners locked into one groove sounds legitimately good — that’s the physics of rhythm, not flattery — and being inside it is the closest thing music offers to a group exhale.
Why people keep coming back
Drumming is the bluntest stress instrument we have: it’s physical, it’s loud on purpose, and it requires just enough attention to evict whatever you were ruminating about. It’s also the most social class we run — the entire format is listening to other people.
Who this is for
Complete beginners, first and always. Desk workers who need to hit something constructively. Parents who want one hour that is nobody else’s. Drummers are welcome but should expect to hold the boring part — in a circle, the boring part is the throne.

FAQ
Do I need my own drum? No — drums and percussion are provided. If you own a hand drum you love, bring it.
Is it loud? Pleasantly. It’s a room of hand drums, not a metal show. Earplugs available if you’re sensitive.
I have zero rhythm. You have a heartbeat and a walking pace; that’s rhythm. The circle does the rest.
Curious about a real kit afterwards? Drum lessons start at $15 for your first lesson.
