At-Home Piano Lessons in Gowanus: Write a Short Piece with Three Notes

· 2 min read

Kalman Music Lessons is a New York City music school — lessons at your home in NYC or Westchester, at one of our NYC studios, or online.

Kalman Music Lessons offers at-home piano lessons in Gowanus for beginners and more experienced players. If making your own music is the attraction, you can begin with a tiny composition rather than waiting until you understand every scale. Limit the notes, make a short pattern and decide how it should end.

At a lesson in your Gowanus home, you can develop the idea on the same piano or keyboard used for practice. Save the idea as a voice memo or written note so the teacher can hear your starting point without expecting a polished performance.

Start with C, D and E

Find C just to the left of a pair of black keys, then the next two white keys, D and E. Play each slowly. Choose a four-beat rhythm and use only those notes for a short phrase. Repeating a note is allowed; silence can be part of the rhythm too.

For example, try C–D–E–E with one note on each beat. Play it again, then change only the final note to C. Listen to the difference. This is a small composition experiment, not a rule that every melody should end the same way.

Change one musical decision

Keep the pitches and change the rhythm, or keep the rhythm and change one pitch. Avoid changing everything at once: you want to hear what the decision did.

Make two versions and choose the one you prefer. Describe your reason in ordinary language—“This feels more finished” or “I like the pause.” Musical vocabulary can develop alongside those observations.

Once the phrase is easy to repeat, ask your teacher whether a simple bass note would support it. You do not need to add a left-hand pattern before the melody has a clear identity.

Give the piece a beginning and ending

Arrange the material in three short parts: introduce your phrase, repeat it with one change, then return to an ending you recognize. Leave a pause after the last note instead of drifting straight back to the start.

Write the note letters and rhythm cues, use notation if you know it, or record a short demonstration. The important thing is being able to recover your idea. Ask the teacher to help refine the playing without replacing all the choices that made it yours.

Our first-song writing guide explores ways to develop a small musical idea further.

Common questions

Is composition suitable for a complete beginner?

Yes, when the task is small enough. A few notes can teach repetition, contrast, pulse and listening while basic playing skills develop.

Can I combine songwriting and piano technique in home lessons?

Tell Kalman Music Lessons that creating music is a priority when you request a Gowanus piano teacher. We can discuss a suitable match; the specific approach and available lesson times are confirmed before booking.
