Common questions

Piano — what students ask.

Do I need a real piano to start?

A weighted 88-key keyboard is fine for the first 6-12 months. We'll help you pick one — or you can rent through our studio with free lessons included.

Can adults learn piano from scratch?

Absolutely — over half our piano students started as adults. We build lessons around music you actually want to play, so progress feels rewarding from week one.

How old should kids be to start piano?

We recommend starting around age 5-6 when hand size and focus align. We use fun, story-based materials to keep young students engaged.

How much are piano lessons in Pelham?

Start with a first lesson — a real 30-minute in-home piano lesson with your matched teacher, so you can see the fit before committing. After that, flexible 4- and 10-lesson packages let you save and use credits at your pace. See our Westchester pricing page for full rates.

Do your teachers travel to Pelham?

Yes! Our piano teachers travel directly to your Pelham home for every lesson. You can also choose online lessons if that's more convenient. Same teacher, same time each week.

Can I start piano as a complete beginner in Pelham?

Absolutely. Many of our Pelham students start with zero experience. Your teacher will build a custom plan starting with the basics, and you'll be playing music you enjoy within the first few weeks.

How we teach piano in Pelham

Piano lessons here are built to help players refine their technique, deepen their musicality, and grow into expressive performers. Every session balances disciplined skill-building with room for creativity, so students gain confidence while exploring a wide range of styles. Whether someone is just starting out or working through advanced repertoire, the instruction adapts to their goals and pace.

Lessons cover the essentials that make playing feel natural: hand position, finger independence, scales and arpeggios, sight-reading, and dynamic control. From there, students shift their attention to rhythm, phrasing, and articulation, learning to shape a line and carry real emotion through the keys. Technical exercises are always tied back to actual music, so progress feels musical rather than mechanical.

Performance is a central part of how students learn to apply their skills. They work through solo pieces, duets, and ensemble arrangements, developing a feel for interpretation, timing, and expressive dynamics along the way. That variety builds the versatility and steadiness needed to play comfortably alone, in a chamber setting, or alongside other musicians.

Instruction is shaped around each student's individual objectives and rate of progress. Beginners settle into posture, note reading, and basic rhythm, while more experienced players take on demanding compositions, improvisation, and subtle phrasing. Kalman Music keeps the atmosphere supportive and engaging throughout, pairing consistent practice with genuine creative exploration.

★★★★★
Noa is fantastic - she is easily able to adapt a lesson based on needs, even right in the moment. I started Ukelele with my son, and with a 30 min piano lesson for me. She was able to figure out a way for him to join me at the piano, for some fun and impromptu music composition time (and we are both beginners). Very inspiring, highly recommend.

Tal is a wonderful and patient piano teacher and I would highly recommend to anyone! I took lessons as a kid and hated it and have forgotten so much. Now as an adult, I’m back and Tal has completely adapted to what my goals are and my knowledge and gotten me so excited to get back into learning! If you’re an adult looking to learn a new skill, I couldn’t recommend him enough. He strikes a great balance between music theory and piano technique and is an incredible musician who can break down complex concepts. It’s never too late to start learning!

Tal has been an amazing piano teacher for our 9-year-old son. He comes to our home, which makes everything so easy, and from the very first lesson, he made our son feel comfortable and excited to learn. Tal is incredibly knowledgeable, patient, and warm—he really knows how to connect with kids and keep them motivated. We’ve seen so much progress, and more importantly, our son truly enjoys playing. We’re so grateful to have found Tal and highly recommend him to any family looking for a skilled and kind teacher!
