Our Teachers' Review
The Rico Royal 3.0 strength is designed for more advanced alto saxophone students who have developed strong embouchure control and consistent air support. This reed provides excellent projection, tonal depth, and dynamic range that supports higher-level playing.
Students typically move to a 3.0 reed after a year or more of consistent study, when their embouchure muscles are strong enough to handle the increased resistance without strain. The payoff is a more professional sound with better control over dynamics and articulation.
Our teachers recommend the 3.0 strength for students who are performing regularly, preparing for auditions, or working on advanced repertoire that demands tonal sophistication. As with all reed transitions, the move from 2.5 to 3.0 should be gradual, with students alternating between strengths until the new reed feels comfortable.
