Our Teachers' Review
Strength 2.5 is the sweet spot for most developing alto saxophone students. It provides enough resistance to produce a rich, full tone while remaining comfortable enough for extended practice sessions. Many of our students settle on 2.5 reeds for months or even years.
At this strength, students have enough control over their embouchure and air support to take full advantage of the reed's tonal potential. The sound becomes noticeably more mature and focused compared to softer strengths, which is motivating for students who are progressing through their studies.
Our teachers consider 2.5 the standard recommendation for students who have been playing for 6 months to a year or more. It works well across a wide range of playing situations, from solo practice to ensemble performance.
