Our Teachers' Review
The Rico Royal 1.5 strength reed is where we start most brand new alto saxophone students. A softer reed makes it significantly easier to produce a clear, consistent sound during the critical first weeks of playing, when students are still developing their embouchure and air support.
Many beginners struggle with tone production on harder reeds, which can be discouraging and lead to bad habits like biting or using excessive pressure. The 1.5 strength eliminates this problem — students can focus on proper technique and musicality rather than fighting to get a sound out of the instrument.
Our teachers typically keep students on 1.5 reeds for the first few months, then gradually move them up to 2.0 and eventually 2.5 as their embouchure strengthens. This progression happens naturally and at each student's own pace. Rico Royal reeds offer excellent consistency from reed to reed, which is important for beginners who need predictable response.
