Our Teachers' Review
Book 2 picks up exactly where Book 1 leaves off, expanding the student's range into the upper register while introducing more complex rhythmic patterns and musical concepts. The ensemble-style exercises prepare students for band, jazz ensemble, or any group playing situation.
Our teachers consider the completion of both Essential Elements books as the baseline for 'functional saxophone playing.' Students who've worked through this material can produce a good tone across most of the instrument's range, read music confidently, and participate meaningfully in ensemble settings.
The upper register work in Book 2 is particularly well-handled. The transition from the first octave to the second (and eventually the altissimo) can be challenging, and the book provides carefully scaffolded exercises that make this expansion feel natural rather than intimidating.
After completing Book 2, students are ready for more advanced study. Our curriculum typically transitions to the Universal Method (for comprehensive technique) or Practical Studies (for targeted skill development), depending on the student's goals and interests.
For students interested in jazz, completing both Essential Elements books provides enough fundamental skill to begin exploring improvisation, blues scales, and jazz standards alongside continued technical development.
