Beginners – All Ages
Every saxophone student in our studio starts with Essential Elements. It's the industry standard for good reason — clear progression, solid fundamentals, and enough variety to keep students engaged through the critical first year.
Essential Elements for Band – Alto Saxophone, Book 1
$10–$14The starting point for all our saxophone beginners. Essential Elements builds tone production, fingerings, rhythm reading, and basic music theory in a logical sequence. We love it because it gets students playing recognizable melodies quickly while building real technique underneath.
Essential Elements for Band – Alto Saxophone, Book 2
$10–$14The continuation of Book 1, expanding into the upper register, more complex rhythms, and ensemble-style playing. Students who complete both books have a solid foundation for any style of saxophone playing, from jazz to classical.
Intermediate to Advanced (Including Adult Beginners)
For advancing students and adult learners who move quickly through the basics, these books provide the technical depth and musical challenges needed to become a truly capable saxophonist.
Universal Method for Saxophone by Paul DeVille
$15–$20A comprehensive method that covers everything from fundamentals to advanced technique. Our teachers use this with adult beginners who want a thorough, no-nonsense approach, and with intermediate students looking to fill gaps in their training. It's been a standard for over a century for good reason.
Practical Studies for Saxophone, Book 1
$8–$12Targeted etudes that develop specific technical skills — articulation, dynamics, finger coordination, and musical phrasing. We assign these alongside repertoire work to make sure students aren't just learning songs but actually building saxophone-specific technique.
Practical Studies for Saxophone, Book 2
$8–$12The advanced companion to Book 1 with more demanding etudes. Students working through Book 2 are developing the kind of technical command that opens up jazz improvisation, classical solo work, and professional-level playing.

Explore Saxophone LessonsReeds
Reeds are essential to producing sound on a saxophone, and finding the right strength makes a huge difference in tone quality and ease of playing. We recommend Rico Royal reeds for their consistency and value. As students develop, they'll gradually move up in reed strength.
Rico Royal Alto Sax Reed – Strength 1.5
$15–$20Starting strength for brand new beginners. Soft and easy to produce sound.
Rico Royal Alto Sax Reed – Strength 2.0
$15–$20A step up from 1.5, offering slightly more resistance and a fuller tone. Great for students who have been playing for a few months.
Rico Royal Alto Sax Reed – Strength 2.5
$15–$20The most common strength for developing alto sax students. Provides a good balance of tone quality and playability.
Rico Royal Alto Sax Reed – Strength 3.0
$15–$20For more advanced students with well-developed embouchures. Offers excellent tone projection and control.
Rico Royal Tenor Sax Reed – Strength 2.0
$18–$25Starting strength for tenor saxophone beginners. The larger reed requires more air support, so we start tenor players slightly higher than alto beginners.
Rico Royal Tenor Sax Reed – Strength 2.5
$18–$25The standard strength for developing tenor sax players. Full tone with comfortable playability.
Rico Royal Tenor Sax Reed – Strength 3.0
$18–$25For advanced tenor players seeking maximum tone quality and projection. Requires strong embouchure control.
Mouthpieces
A quality mouthpiece is one of the most important factors in a saxophone student's sound. We recommend Yamaha mouthpieces for their consistent quality and excellent response across all skill levels. Mouthpiece patches protect both the mouthpiece and the player's teeth.
Yamaha 4C Alto Saxophone Mouthpiece
$30–$40Our standard recommendation for alto saxophone students. The 4C produces a clear, centered tone and responds easily across the full range of the instrument.
Yamaha 4C Tenor Saxophone Mouthpiece
$30–$40The tenor equivalent of our go-to alto mouthpiece. Produces a warm, full tenor sound with excellent response and intonation.
Yamaha 5C Alto Saxophone Mouthpiece
$30–$40A slightly more open mouthpiece than the 4C, offering a bigger sound with more flexibility. Ideal for advancing students or those leaning toward jazz.
Yamaha 5C Tenor Saxophone Mouthpiece
$30–$40The more open tenor mouthpiece option. Produces a bigger, warmer sound that advanced students and jazz players will appreciate.
Mouthpiece Patches – 0.35mm Clear
$5–$8Thin, clear patches that protect the mouthpiece from tooth wear and provide a comfortable cushion. Barely noticeable but make a real difference in comfort and mouthpiece longevity.
Mouthpiece Patches – 0.80mm Black
$5–$8Thicker patches for students who want more cushioning. Some players prefer the extra grip and comfort, especially during longer playing sessions.
Straps & Harnesses
Proper support for your saxophone prevents neck strain, promotes good posture, and lets you focus on playing rather than holding up the instrument. We recommend harnesses for younger or smaller students and traditional neck straps for others.
Saxophone Harness – Small
$20–$30Distributes the saxophone's weight across the shoulders and back instead of the neck. Essential for younger or smaller students playing alto sax.
Saxophone Harness – Large
$20–$30Full-size harness for tenor saxophone or taller students. Provides excellent weight distribution for heavier instruments.
Neck Strap – Short
$8–$15A quality padded neck strap in a shorter length, suitable for younger or shorter players who prefer a traditional strap over a harness.
Neck Strap – Standard
$8–$15Our standard recommendation for most saxophone students. Quality padding and reliable hardware at a great price.
Neck Strap – Long
$8–$15Extended length for taller players or those who prefer to play with the saxophone positioned lower. Same quality padding and hardware.
Cases, Stands & Accessories
Protect your instrument and keep it accessible for practice. A good case prevents damage during transport, and a stand makes it easy to pick up your saxophone for quick practice sessions throughout the day.
Saxophone Stand
$15–$25A sturdy, compact stand that keeps your saxophone safe and accessible at home. Having your instrument on a stand instead of in a case dramatically increases practice frequency.
Alto Saxophone Case
$40–$60A lightweight, protective case for transporting your alto saxophone to lessons, rehearsals, and performances. Includes space for accessories.
Tenor Saxophone Case
$50–$80Protective case designed for the larger tenor saxophone. Durable construction with comfortable carrying options for this heavier instrument.
