Our Teachers' Review
The Piano Adventures Primer Level Lesson Book by Nancy and Randall Faber is the cornerstone of our young beginner curriculum. We've used it with hundreds of students, and it consistently delivers the perfect balance of fun and learning.
What makes this book special is the way it introduces musical concepts through characters and stories that kids genuinely connect with. The progression is carefully designed — students learn pre-reading (playing by finger number and position) before diving into staff notation, which builds confidence early on. By the end of the Primer, students are reading notes on the grand staff and playing simple but satisfying pieces.
The accompanying theory and performance books (sold separately) are excellent complements, but the Lesson Book alone gives teachers everything they need for a structured first several months of piano study. We typically spend 4–6 months on this level depending on the student's age and practice consistency.
One thing our teachers particularly appreciate is how the book naturally integrates ear training and rhythm work into the lesson pieces rather than treating them as separate exercises. This holistic approach means students develop musicianship from day one, not just note-reading skills.
