How Our Music Lessons Work
At Kalman Music, we’ve reimagined music education for busy New Yorkers. Instead of requiring you to commute to a music school, we bring professional instruction directly to your Manhattan or Brooklyn home. Our approach combines the convenience of in-home lessons with the expertise of conservatory-trained musicians who perform professionally throughout NYC. Here’s exactly how it works.
The Kalman Difference: Why We’re Not Your Typical Music School
Professional Performers as Teachers
Every Kalman instructor is an active performing musician—not just a music teacher. They play at venues across NYC, tour internationally, and maintain active careers as artists. When you learn from someone who lives and breathes music professionally, you get authentic, real-world musical education.
Many of our teachers hold degrees from Juilliard, Manhattan School of Music, The New School, Berklee College of Music, and other top conservatories. But credentials alone don’t make a great teacher—we select instructors who are patient, enthusiastic, and skilled at meeting students where they are.
In-Home Lessons: Convenience Without Compromise
Manhattan and Brooklyn traffic is brutal. Between work, family, and everything else competing for your time, who has an extra hour for roundtrip commutes to a music school? We eliminate that completely.
Your teacher comes to you—to your apartment, brownstone, or home. You save time, learn in a comfortable familiar environment, and can practice immediately after your lesson while concepts are fresh. For parents with multiple children, we can schedule siblings back-to-back during a single visit. For busy professionals, evening and weekend lessons fit seamlessly into your schedule.
Personalized Musicianship Path™
There’s no generic curriculum at Kalman Music. From your first lesson, your teacher designs a personalized learning path based on:
- Your musical goals (playing for fun, performing, conservatory prep, etc.)
- Your interests (classical, jazz, pop, rock, musical theater, etc.)
- Your learning style (visual, kinesthetic, by ear, methodical, exploratory)
- Your schedule and practice capacity
- Your current skill level
This isn’t a sales pitch—it’s literally how we operate. Every student gets a custom roadmap because we believe music education should serve you, not force you into a predetermined box.

We Match You with the Perfect Teacher Based on what you share, we match you with an instructor who specializes in your instrument and teaching style. Want to learn jazz piano? We’ll match you with a jazz pianist. Kids lessons? We’ll find someone experienced with children.
Schedule Your Trial We’ll coordinate with your teacher to find a time that works. Trials are completely free—no credit card required, no obligation.
Step 2: Your Teacher Comes to Your Home
Arrival Your instructor arrives at your scheduled time with everything they need for the lesson (method books, sheet music, teaching materials). You just need:
- Your instrument (or keyboard for piano students)
- A quiet space for the lesson (living room, bedroom, practice space)
- A music stand (helpful but not required)
First Lesson Focus Your trial lesson includes:
- Getting to know each other and discussing your goals
- Assessing your current level (if you have experience)
- Playing together—even beginners will make music in the first lesson!
- Discussing a personalized plan for your learning
- Answering all your questions about lessons, practice, pricing, scheduling
No Pressure Decision After the trial, you’ll know if Kalman is right for you. There’s absolutely no pressure to commit. If it’s a good fit, we’ll schedule regular weekly lessons. If not, no worries—the trial was free regardless.
Step 3: Personalized Curriculum Begins
Your Custom Learning Plan
After your trial, your teacher creates a tailored curriculum that might include:
For Beginners:
- Proper technique from day one (hand position, posture, breath control)
- Music reading fundamentals
- Simple songs you can play within weeks
- Basic theory concepts
- Developing good practice habits
For Intermediate Students:
- Advancing technique and expanding repertoire
- Deeper music theory and application
- Style-specific skills (jazz improvisation, classical interpretation, pop arrangements)
- Performance preparation
- Musicianship skills (ear training, sight-reading, rhythm)
For Advanced Students:
- Refining artistry and interpretation
- Conservatory or audition preparation
- Advanced theory and analysis
- Professional performance skills
- Collaborative projects
Music You Love Want to learn Taylor Swift songs? Jazz standards? Classical Beethoven? Video game soundtracks? Your teacher incorporates music you’re excited about, making practice something you look forward to rather than dread.
Step 4: Weekly Lessons & Practice
Consistent Weekly Schedule We schedule your lessons at the same day and time each week—consistency builds momentum. Life happens, so we have a reasonable cancellation policy for illness, emergencies, and occasional conflicts.
Lesson Structure (Typical 60-Minute Lesson)
- Warm-up & Review (10-15 min): Technical exercises, reviewing last week’s material
- New Concepts (20-25 min): Introducing new technique, theory, or repertoire
- Application (15-20 min): Applying concepts to actual music—playing songs, improvising, practicing new skills
- Practice Planning (5-10 min): Clear assignment for the week, addressing questions
Between Lessons: Practice Your teacher provides specific, achievable practice assignments. For busy adults, this might be 20-30 minutes a few times a week. For serious students, it might be an hour daily. We tailor expectations to your lifestyle.
You’re not alone in practice—your teacher can provide:
- Practice recordings demonstrating techniques
- Custom sheet music and arrangements
- Practice tracks to play along with
- Video demonstrations for complex concepts
- Text or email support between lessons
Step 5: Performance Opportunities
Bi-Annual Student Recitals Twice a year, we host student recitals where you can perform for a supportive audience of fellow students and families. These performances are:
- Optional (no pressure if you’re not ready)
- Supportive and encouraging
- Great motivation for focused practice
- Confidence-building experiences
- Memorable celebrations of progress
We work with nervous performers through anxiety-reduction techniques and ensure everyone feels successful regardless of level.
Other Performance Paths Depending on your goals:
- School band, orchestra, or jazz ensemble preparation
- Conservatory audition coaching
- Guidance toward NYC jam sessions (for jazz students)
- Recording projects
- Collaborative performances with other students

Frequently Asked Questions
What if I’ve never played music before? Perfect! Most of our students start as complete beginners. We teach you everything from scratch—how to hold your instrument, read music, and play your first songs. No prior experience required.
How long are lessons? 30-minute and 60-minute lessons are available. Young children (ages 5-8) usually do best with 30 minutes. Teens and adults typically benefit from 60-minute lessons. Your teacher can recommend what’s right for you.
How quickly will I see progress? Most students can play simple songs within the first few weeks. Meaningful progress happens over months and years, but you’ll notice improvement every few lessons if you practice regularly.
What if I can’t practice much? We work with your reality. If you can only practice 15 minutes a few times a week, we’ll design lessons around that. Progress will be slower, but you’ll still learn and enjoy music.
Do I need my own instrument? Yes, you’ll need an instrument to practice on between lessons. For piano, a full-size keyboard with weighted keys works fine to start. We can provide guidance on purchasing or renting instruments.
Can I switch teachers if it’s not a good fit? Absolutely. Teacher-student fit matters enormously. If you’re not connecting with your teacher, let us know and we’ll match you with someone else. No hard feelings, no extra fees.
What if I need to cancel a lesson? Life happens! We have a reasonable cancellation policy. Just communicate with your teacher as soon as possible when you need to cancel or reschedule.
Can I take lessons at your studio instead of at home? Yes! If you prefer to come to our Manhattan studio, that option is available at a lower price ($50/30min, $80/60min).
Do you teach online lessons? We specialize in in-person instruction, but can accommodate online lessons in certain situations. Contact us to discuss.
