About Kalman Music

The Only Music School Built for the Busy New Yorker

Whether you work 9–5 and need a creative outlet, you're picking up a new hobby, or you want to take your playing and writing to the next level — we're here to work around your needs, your schedule, and your budget.

Built Because Adults Deserve Better

We started Kalman Music because adults don't really have a solution for music lessons that makes sense for their lives. Traditional schools expect you to lock in a fixed weekly slot, commute across town, follow a rigid curriculum, and pay for the whole semester upfront. That doesn't work for most New Yorkers.

Flexible Scheduling

Not necessarily the same time every week. Not necessarily every week. A school aligned with your not-so-fixed schedule, because life in NYC doesn't run on a metronome.

Neighborhood Teachers

Your teacher is usually not more than a couple of blocks from where you live or work. No crosstown commute, no wasted time — just walk over and play.

Your Music, Your Way

Lessons are based on what you want to play — not what is required or expected from you by some textbook. Flexible programming and lesson plans, tailored to your goals.

Flexible Payment

Monthly memberships (ClassPass-style) or lesson packages — pay per lesson with flexible scheduling. Unlike the “pay upfront for the whole semester” approach, you stay in control.

Your Teachers Are NYC's Working Musicians

Our teachers are professional, active musicians who bring knowledge from the bandstand and from years of actual, practical playing. When you study with a Kalman teacher, you're learning from someone who performed last weekend — not someone who stopped gigging years ago.

A lot of other schools have teachers who aren't necessarily actively playing. The result is stale teaching, outdated approaches, and ultimately lower value for your money. We believe your teacher should be living the music they're teaching you.

From jazz clubs in the Village to concert halls on the Upper West Side, our teachers bring the real New York music scene into every lesson.

What Sets Our Teachers Apart

Active Performers

Playing regularly at NYC venues, bringing fresh repertoire and real-world technique to your lessons.

Conservatory-Trained

Graduates of Juilliard, Manhattan School of Music, Berklee, New England Conservatory, and more.

Real Repertoire

Learn from musicians who play the music they teach — on stage, in the studio, and in your lessons.

The Best of Both Worlds

We're combining the music school approach with private teachers from the stages of NYC. It isn't a one-location kind of school — it's a network of teachers, giving you the best of both worlds.

School Structure

  • Easy online payment and billing
  • Simple scheduling and rescheduling
  • Substitute teacher if yours is unavailable
  • Dedicated student customer support

Private Instruction

  • Lessons at the teacher's studio or at your home
  • True one-on-one attention, in person or online
  • Continuous, ongoing feedback from experts
  • Your choice of format — whatever works for you

Kalman Music isn't a one-location school. It's a network of neighborhood teachers with the structure and support of a professional music school.

When Teachers Thrive, Students Thrive

1.5–3× Higher teacher pay than traditional schools

Our teachers want you to get to where you want to be — and not just fill up lesson time quickly to collect a paycheck. This is because they are getting properly compensated for their time, with wages ranging between 1.5 and 3 times what they would earn at other traditional music schools.

The result is a more flexible, happier teacher who is able to pursue their life calling of creating and performing music regularly. They're invested in your progress because they're not burned out, underpaid, or looking for the exit.

Studying with us means supporting live music and musicians in New York — an industry that is heavily relying on donations and grants. Your tuition directly sustains the careers of working artists.
