Metal shows in New York this week

Metal in New York lives in a handful of dark Brooklyn rooms, and they punch way above their square footage. Saint Vitus Bar in Greenpoint is the altar — black walls, brutal sound, the spot every touring band wants. Out in Bushwick, Purgatory and The Meadows run the local-heavy bills: doom, hardcore, death, the stuff that never makes it to a big venue. These are small rooms, which is the whole point — you're three feet from the amp, the cover's cheap, and you can usually pay at the door. Vitus is a short walk from the Greenpoint Ave G stop; Purgatory and The Meadows sit near the Jefferson and Myrtle-Wyckoff lines in Bushwick, close enough to hit two shows in a night. Metal bills get added late, so the list fills in through the week — keep an eye on it midweek for weekend shows.
