Live music near the 1 train

The 1 runs straight down the spine of downtown Manhattan, and the West Village stretch is jazz country. Get off at Christopher St or Houston and you're in the basements and brownstone rooms that built the city's sound — Smalls and the Village Vanguard hold their corners off Seventh Ave, while Le Poisson Rouge and the Jazz Gallery sit just a few blocks from the Houston and Bleecker-area stops. This is the line for a slower, deeper night: two sets in one room, a late hang, a walk past the same doors Coltrane and Monk played. Chelsea, a few stops up, adds rooms of its own. The shows below update as venues confirm sets, and jazz rooms often add late sets last-minute — so refresh before you go down the stairs.

Good to know

Where are the best jazz clubs near the 1 train?

The West Village stops on the 1 sit close to Smalls, the Village Vanguard, and the Jazz Gallery, with Le Poisson Rouge a short walk away. It's the densest run of jazz rooms in the city.

Can I walk in to a jazz show off the 1 train tonight?

Often, yes. Many West Village rooms sell at the door for the late set, and some run continuous sets where you can catch the second one as a walk-in. Our list shows tonight's confirmed sets below.

What's near the 1 train besides the West Village?

Heading uptown, the Chelsea stops open up more downtown-leaning rooms, and the line connects easily to other downtown venues. The West Village cluster is the heart of it, though.
